Y? Because We Love You

Things around the Drake home didn't seem quite hectic enough this holiday season so we thought we would take a quick jaunt down to Las Vegas for the weekend and support our feline friends from the South. We left Saturday morning, were back Sunday afternoon, and still had time to cheer the Cougars to a victory in between. Yes, we can say that we were there to see the infamous last second blocked field goal in the city of sin.

My favorite part of sporting events....stadium food. This is before the game had even started and I am all stocked up. Notice the already empty foil that only minutes before had contained a delicious hot dog.

Sporting our BYU attire and pride. Who knew it was so cold in Las Vegas? I don't think the guy sitting behind us wanted to be seen.

Rushing the field after the big win.

2007 in a Nutshell

I have been getting a lot of cute Christmas cards with a 'family summary' enclosed and it has been fun to catch up with everyone even if it through a one page, holiday bordered, printout. Well, I am jumping on the bandwagon but my cards have already been sent out so the electronic version will have to do this year.

We are still living in Layton and loving it. Our original plan of fixing up our house and living there about three years has turned into a 5 year plus plan. We love our neighborhood and it is a good central location since Mark works in Ogden and I make the commute to Salt Lake. We even went to Layton High's state championship football game. It was hard to shed the blue and gold of our almamator but the Lancers needed us.

Mark is working at Barnes Aerospace as an engineer and most days enjoys his "grown-up" job. He has a lot of responsibly and a lot of stress but he is great at what he does and would probably be bored without all the deadlines, problems, and whatever else aerospace people deal with. Outside of work he found time to continue biking and completed the LOTOJA (race from Logan to Jackson Hole). He has also been reliving his glory days playing softball and a little coed soccer with want-to-be super star wife. He is a wonderful father and loves spending time with 'his boy'.

I am working two days a week for Legacy Health care as a social worker. My career goals have definitely moved way down the priority list after having Jackson but it is nice to have some adult time and little extra shopping money. As mentioned, Mark and I continue to enjoy attempting to be sporty and finding ways to incorporate the wee one. I absolutely love being a mom and find new joys in every stage that Jackson transitions through.

Jacskson is not currently working due to heightened child labor laws, but keeps plenty busy at home. He quickly moved from walking to running and never slows down. He is always busy exploring, emptying, destroying, and then starting all over. He still LOVES to watch Signing time (much to my pleasure so I can get things done) and is starting to really get the hang of signing. He can sign: mom, dad, baby, banana, cereal, milk, cracker, cheese, apple, eat, finished, more, ball, dog, cat, bird, fish, cold, hot, tree, thank you, please, airplane, car, and bath. He isn't much of a talker yet and everything still sounds a lot like 'jump' but he puts a lot of enthusiasm in it. He makes me laugh everyday.

We have had a wonderful year and wish you the same.

Why You Wish Your Friends Owned a Helicopter.

In years past we have tried to make down to temple square to see the lights and enjoy the festive atmosphere but this year I didn't feel like fighting the traffic, trying to find parking, and forging the cold with a one year old. I know, bah humbug! Luckily our friends the Hendersons solved this little problem for us....enjoy the lights via helicopter. Their family owns a helicopter company and they graciously invited us to join them for some yule tide air time over Salt Lake. It was great. We took off from Bountiful and then circled downtown a few times. It was perfect, no traffic, warm accommodations, and Jackson actually sat still on my lap the entire time. Thanks Chad and Rach.

The aireal shots didn't turn out very well due to the curved window in the helicopter (at least that was Mark's excuse) but you can get the idea.

Christmas Countdown

I just wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday season. I love this time of year with all the music, lights, parties, food, family, food, gifts, and food. Only 16 more days shoppers, good luck. Merry Christmas.

Memories Past (part 2)

Although we were not able to go to Seattle this year we did have a couple of fun trips with our families this summer.
In June we went to Island Park with Mark's ENTIRE family. He has seven brothers and sisters and all but one are married with kids so it makes for quite a congregation when we all get together. We stayed in cabins, went into Yellowstone, went canoeing, and hung out with the fam. Here are some of the highlights.

There we are, all 32 of us. That is just his immediate family!

"Backpacking" in Yellowstone. I am 28 years old and it was my first time there.

Worn out after a long day of buffalo and geyser watching.

Canoeing with dad.

Jackson just enjoying nature.

Tagged

I have to interrupt the trip down memory lane because my friend Carly tagged me. I am supposed to tell you six interesting things about me. Well, I don't know how interesting they are but here you go.

1. I have had four reconstructive surgeries on my knees all before the age of 21. Three on one and one on the other. Consequently my knees are not the picture of beauty they once were. The first one was a product of a faulty layup playing basketball and the next three were from various soccer injuries. I have two three inch long scars on my right leg and one on my left. A bright young three year old once got overly excited and started yelling, "There is a worm crawling up your leg!" No, just a little scar tissue sweetie. He was really disappointed.

2. I have an unnatural fear of water and drowning. I have never been a great swimmer, I mean I can get to the side of swimming pool but that is about the extent of my aquatic abilities. I also think that there are creatures lurking just beneath the surface waiting to attack when I show the first sign of weakness. When I was young I thought that Jaws lived in the irrigation ditch by our house (just down the road from bigfoot's cave.) My bus stop was right by the ditch and I would always quickly pass by with much trepidation.

3. In fifth grade I won the National Audubon Society Essay contest for an essay that I didn't write. We had to write the essay as an assignment and I forgot about it until the morning it was due. My dad said he would whip something up for me and drop it off at school. I am ashamed to say that I didn't even read it before I turned it in. A few weeks later they announced the winners over the intercom of the entire school and a representative from the Audubon Society came to my house to present me with the grand prize of binoculars and my very own bird watching book. To this day I still feel guilty that Aaron Fuller only got second when the prize should have been his.

4. My secret lifelong dream was to be a cheerleader. Everything about appealed to me: the outfits, the moves, the hair, and the jackets with the zip out hoods with your name on the back. I never followed this dream due to absolutely zero talent in this area but I would often practice at home in front of the mirror. I perfected the clap, you know the one where you cross your hands and then bring them back out before you clap. I am super good at that. I also worked on the different facial expressions that went with the dances and could tie a really good bow with ribbon around my ponytail. I could never quite master any tumbling, dancing, stunting, cheering, or painting cool posters for the halls so my dream never came to fruition.

5. I lived in China for six months and taught English to Kindergarten age children when I was twenty. It was a great cultural experience and I had so much fun. I also got engaged while I was there...big mistake. He was another American teacher in our group not Sum Yong Guy from the great Communist Curtain.

6. I had major power hair from 6th grade into my sophomore year of high school. What was I thinking? I have at least triple the amount of hair of the average person and it is naturally curly on top of that. I would put my head upside down, defuse it, use a half bottle of Rave hairspray, and then curl it with a 1/4" curling iron to add a little extra volume. It was huge!!

7. I have a bad habit of leaving cupboards and drawers open after I use them. I will often walk into the kitchen and find 5 or 6 cupboards open or go in my bedroom and draweres will be left open from getting dressed that morning. What a slob. I have tried to do better but I just can't seem to rememeber.

Whoops that was seven, I guess I got carried away. There you go. Now you know more about me than you even wanted to. I now tag Linds, Rachael, Celeste, Rebecca, and Bobbi.

Memories past

As 2007 draws to a close it warrants a time of reflection, to consider the events that have shaped our year, misty water colored memories, like sands through an hour glass.....blah, blah, blah. Actually, I needed some new material for posts so I thought I would backtrack to preblogging times and share some events the Drake family endured/enjoyed this year.

In March of this year Jackson was hospitalized with RSV and pneumonia. That morning I had taken Jackson hiking up Adams Canyon and when we got home he didn't sound very good. He had a cold but now he had that raspy, crackly (official medical terms) sound when he breathed so I called the doctor and asked if I should be concerned. She assured me that it was probably nothing but to bring him in just in case. Well, two hours and two breathing treatments later we were sent to the hospital for the full workup. We ended up staying four days until he could come off the oxygen. Poor little guy had an IV in his foot, one in his head, oxygen in his nose, and to add insult to injury a pastel colored circus animal nightie.

Forward to September of 2007 and insert pictures of Mark's brothers and their families having a wonderful time in Seattle. Notice we are not included in the pictures. Our vacation fund went straight into the pockets of ol' McKay. Always a glass half full kind of gal I thought I would put in a plug for vacationing at our local McKay Dee hospital. These are a few of the amenities you would be privileged to enjoy:
1. 75 thread count sheets that spread like a dream over a pull-out vinyl sofa.
2. Hourly checks throughout the night to wake you up and make sure you don't need anything.
3. All the free soda and crushed ice you can endure.
4. A deluxe DVD player that has no remote or external controls so if you 'happen' to be interrupted during your movie by a well intentioned nurse you have to start the entire movie over again.
5. Exquisite cafeteria style dining. *Food expenses are not included in your accommodations price package.
This could all be yours for a mere 20 Gs. Who needs Hawaii?

Stay tuned for more 2007 adventures.

Thanksgiving

This year we had our Thanksgiving feast at my mom's house. She is a fabulous cook and as always, it was delicious. Later that night we went to Mark's parents for pie and games. Unbeknownest to me, green was the color of gratitude this year.

My brother-in-law Tim initiated the old pilgrim game of Jello shots, but not the kind that you and your drinking buddies are used to. The object is to fit your entire mouth around a Jello snack pack, lean back, and swallow the whole thing....without using your hands. Give it a try if you are up for a challenge but have some chapstick ready, severe lip chapping will occur.

Overall it was a wonderful day with our families.

I am a Mother

Yesterday was one of those Sabbaths that was anything but a day of rest. Here is the timeline:

4:00 am -- Jackson crying for 45 min straight for no apparent reason. At least none that I could figure out.

8:55 am -- Jackson wakes up, Mark leaves for his meeting.

9:00 am -- Feed Jackson breakfast. Change first poopy diaper.

9:15 am -- Blow dry my hair. Jackson smashes goldfish crackers all over the carpet.

9:25 am -- Vacuum front room. Jackson empties drawer in the bathroom and throws my comb and mascara in the toilet.

9:35 am -- Clean up bathroom. Finish getting ready. Jackson empties the entire lazy Susan.

9:45 am -- Clean up kitchen and make cookies for church. Jackson falls down the stairs. (Just two, no injuries)

9:50 am -- Jackson throws a full on tantrum when offered his sippy cup. How dare I?

9:55 am -- Change second poopy diaper and his outfit.

10:10 am -- Mark gets home. Go to my meeting...late. Find goldfish laden drool all over the shoulder of my shirt.

10:55 am -- Drive around and try to get Jackson asleep before church.

11:10 am -- Late for church. Jackson wakes up as soon as the car stops.

11:25 am -- Mark takes Jackson home for a nap. We give up. Is is noon yet?

Well, needless to say it was a bad mom morning. Later that day I picked up a book that a friend had given me titled, I am a Mother by Jane Clayson Johnson. She previously anchored on the Early show and now shares her experiences of motherhood. I was needing some solace and maybe a little incentive to continue with this whole mothering thing. She asks the same questions that where going through my mind. Is it supposed to be this hard? No one told me it would be like this-am I doing something wrong? Will my children turn out okay, despite my inadequacies?
I'm sure that all mother's have days like this and I would highly recommend this book if you need a little pick-me-up or when you need to feel like more than 'just a mom'.

Young Love

Last week my youngest brother Christopher proposed to the lovely Miss Keesha Koger. We are trilled to welcome her as the newest member of the Roberts clan. She has proven her worthiness and most importantly can put up with our crazy antics.

Christopher set up a romantic dinner and popped the big question.

After he needed a good chaser of sparkling cider.

Congratulations love birds.

Toilet Paper Trauma

Most days Jackson hangs out with me in the bathroom when I get ready and doesn't cause too much commotion. Well, today I left the bathroom to get dressed and this is what I found when I came back literally one minute later.

Not only had he unrolled the entire roll but had commenced in shredding it too. As soon as he saw me he started shaking his head 'no' and just smiled.

Grateful for the little things

I am following suit in the long line of grateful posts but I wanted to cover more than just the basics. Of course I am very grateful for my family, friends, health, and overall good looks but I wanted to highlight some of the small pleasures that are often overlooked.

#1 I am grateful for 69 cent diet cokes at McDonald's. Where else can you drive through and get 42 ounces of calorie free, carbonated goodness for mere pocket change? I'm lovin' it.

#2 I am grateful for TiVo. The full appreciation for this modern day miracle didn't come until after I had Jackson. Those middle of the night feedings took on a new meaning when I wasn't stuck watching infomercials about knives that cut through shoes and the perfect rotisserie chicken. I could now follow the adventures of Jack Bauer, laugh with my coworkers on the office, and cheer for my favorite bachelorette. I don't watch more TV, I watch better TV.

#3 I am grateful for bootcamp. Yes, it may sound a little narcissistic but I love pushing myself or at least having someone else pushing my body to the outer echelons of its physical ability. Okay, it is not really that dramatic but I do love the workout and it helped with that dreaded post baby bulge.

#4 I am grateful for my ipod. I know that everyone has one and the novelty has worn off but I continue to cherish my little electronic friend. I have to drive to Salt Lake for work and I get SO tired of the radio. Now I think, I feel like a little Britney today and wallah, Lucky is suddenly blaring through the speakers.
Or....I am heading down the final stretch of my workout and I think, I just can't make it one more step. Press the button and Eye of the Tiger gives me that second wind I need.

#5 I am grateful for my pillow. (No picture shown due to extensive drool marks.) Again everyone has one but I have the perfect one, for me anyway. It took a lot of trial and error but I found it. Not too hard, not too soft, way too big and just perfect. As long as I can remember I have had headaches and I would often wake up with them for no apparent reason. I decided to blame it on my pillow and went in search of the perfect one. I can honestly say that I have not awoke with a headache since the fateful day this union was formed.

#6 I am grateful for my Dyson. Cleaning has taken on a new found pleasure with this household tool. I have no empirical evidence that it never loses suction (insert Australian accent) or picks up better than any other vacuum but just thinking that it does and seeing the dirt in that clear container makes me feel so good. I feel that I have done my best to make our home a cleaner more sanitary environment and I love the perfect vacuum lines it leaves.

These are a few of my favorite things, now let's hear yours.

You Might be a Redneck....

Today we went up to my grandparents farm in Huntsville with my dad and and my brother Trevor. When we got home I was looking through the pictures I had taken and thought, you might be a redneck if....

This is your family vehicle

You have matching camo

You shoot at tin cans during family gatherings

There are cattle in the backdrop of your pictures

No explanation needed

Redneck or not at least we have each other.

Big Jackson, Little Jackson, and Olivia

After I had Jackson I cut down to working two days a week. My wonderful sister Emily watches him both days and he absolutely loves her. She nannies for another family so he goes there one day and a week and she comes to my house on her day off. It works out great. I am able to get some adult interaction, change out of the hoodies and sweats, and I know Jackson is well taken care of.

Jackson loves playing with 'the twins', Jackson and Olivia, and they tolerate him pretty well, especially for two year olds. Em, tells them that baby Jackson is coming and they hide all their toys that they don't want sucked on or otherwise contaminated.

These are just of few shots and them playing in the yard.

Halloween Fun

I think Halloween was made just so parents can dress their kids up in ridiculous costumes and brag about how cute they are. I love it!!!

He kept clapping so he could see his 'paws' move.

Jackson actually didn't mind wearing his costume and even left the hood on most of the night.

This is Jackson with the neighbor girls. So cute.
