Oh Ya, He is 2

I am not sure if the "terrible twos" is a real developmental stage or just some erroneous term that parents made up to make themselves feel not so inadequate while rearing toddlers. Either theory you subscribe to, we are there. Jackson is acting terrible and I feel very inadequate.
We decided to make the big change to a regular bed before the baby comes (Only 4 and a half weeks left!) and oh wow, not pretty.
Not enough time spent here....
Led to sleeping here...
We did the usual routine of putting him back in bed about 20 times at bedtime and although that is not my idea of fun that was not the worst of it. He also got up 3 to 4 times a night. Not mad, just awake and kicking his door. We tried the side rail, then double side rail, taped his light switch off, and put away all books and toys. (Waking up to Thomas' whistle at 3 in morning is not pleasant.) But to no avail. He also was up for the day around six. Well, you can imagine the shear grouchiness that possessed his soul the rest of the day from utter exhaustion. We gave it a valiant effort for about three weeks and then threw in the towel and he is back in the crib in the baby's room. Now we can focus on the tantrums, how fun.
Any suggestions? Feel free to tell me that I am just being wussy and to gird up my loins and take it like the many generations of tired mothers before me. Maybe I am just rationalizing but it is hard to know what to attribute to autism, just being 2, or just plain tiredness. Not that it even matters but charting unknown waters makes one wonder.
On an unrelated note: During my brief stint of unemployment I got bored and painted anything that would hold still. I refinished a dresser for Jackson's 'big boy' room. I should have taken a picture of the 70's finish with golden eagle handles to get the full effect.

I've been flirting with the idea of putting Farrah in a regular bed too, but then I imagine exactly what happened with you and I hold off. I wonder what the trick is?

Ah, Amy. It has been quite a while since I put my 7 yr old in her big girl bed. But I do remember the tiredness, the "mommy can I sleep with you?" and did I mention the fatigue? Keep trying. You could put your new baby in a bassinet or that top section of a play pen... that will give you a little more time for the big transition! Till then I'll be praying for you and Jackson!

Hey Happy Birthday JACKSON!!! Switching beds is a huge deal and it is right around the corner for Georgi. If the side rails didn't work I am not sure if I have any good advice.

As a mom who has never taken away the crib until they are ready. I think it is well worth buying a new crib or borrowing one if the time comes and he still wants to sleep in the crib. It's not worth the sleep that is lost on both sides. With Peter and Joe (18 months apart) the day I brought Joseph home Peter wanted nothing to do with the crib or bottles. Also within the week he also wanted to be potty trained. Everything I wasn't going to push him on. So you never know how Jackson is going to react. He may decide he is big now and that cribs are for babies. I wouldn't push it though.
The sad thing about the terrible 2's is that it last from about 18 months to 4 or even older. It's the tantrums that drive me crazy. But I have to admit that it is my favorite age! They can be so much fun and so cute.

You should never feel inadequate. All kids have tantrums, even I have a tantrum once in a while. When you find the trick to get kids to sleep in their own bed all night, let me know.

By the way Jackson's room is adorable. You are a champ when it comes to home improvement.

hey Amy, if it makes you feel better we've had Zack in his big boy bed since Sept. and he still climbs into bed with us at least once a night. we tried everything and for awhile he would end up falling asleep by the door. Now we just threaten to take away his binki if he doesn't stay in bed so who know when I'll ever get rid of that binki. good luck, if you find something that works let me know!

If Jackson's 4 years old and still wants the crib, maybe we'll need to talk. But otherwise, do what you gotta do! BTW, you need to update my blog on your list! www.celestialviews.blogspot.com
